7 Elements of a Methane Reduction Plan
Methane is responsible for roughly 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution, despite being a small share of emissions by volume. The reason is potency: over a 20-year horizon methane traps about 80 times more heat than CO₂, yet it clears the atmosphere in ~12 years. That combination makes methane abatement the single fastest lever the energy industry has to slow near-term warming — and the IEA estimates more than 75% of oil-and-gas methane can be cut with existing technology, much of it at low or even negative cost.
Policymakers are moving in step. The EU Methane Regulation (2024/1787), in force since August 2024, introduced mandatory measurement, reporting and verification (MRV), leak detection and repair, and limits on routine venting and flaring — with import-side obligations phasing in from January 2027. A structured methane reduction plan is how operators get ahead of that curve. Consider building yours around these seven elements.
Map the frameworks that apply to you before anything else: the EU Methane Regulation (2024/1787), OGMP 2.0 reporting (Level 4/5), US EPA rules, the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), and IPCC guidance — plus the MRV and National Inventory Report obligations under Article 13 of the Paris Agreement. Note that in July 2026 the European Commission recommended a three-year suspension of penalties (2027–2029) amid energy-security pressures — so track both the rules and their enforcement timeline.
